Self-image and external image of the organisation

Organisations often have a positive image of themselves.

Only rarely is this self-image reflected in the external view of the organisation. However, other views are quickly rejected as unfounded, especially by managers. Criticism is dismissed as not being substantiated. In the recruiting field, this recently even went so far that managers spoke of an “arrogance of the applicants”. In one case, they even further claimed that they would like to see “more unemployment to get rid of the arrogance of applicants”. As a leader, it is particularly perfidious for a purely personal benefit to wish an entire society economically worse off.

However, the core questions remain unchanged: how do you recognise a lack of congruence between the organisation’s image and that of the outside world, and how do you deal with this?

Photo by Daniels Joffe on Unsplash

Wrong focus

Most of the time, a wrong focus on only a few parts of the organisation is the first aspect of the problem. It is not uncommon to focus only on sales. This behaviour is where several effects come together. Isomorphism (iso = equal; morph = appearance) is the first problem since strongly extroverted managers often prefer similar characteristics when filling positions. The result is a non-diverse group that often acts in a cowboy manner. Toxic masculinity is not infrequently a directly simultaneous effect. In this way, people confirm each other’s greatness. Sitting in a filter bubble approved by the echo chamber effect, one almost always finds one’s behaviour to be exemplarily correct, even if the results are not even close to the objective. Rebuttals or criticism are ignored with alleged envy motives or ignorance.

Learn More
