King David: ruthless warlord of Israel

Some years ago, when I decided to read the Bible more carefully, there is a certain thing that really shocked me. I grew up hearing all the stories about how King David was a great hero and a “man after God’s own heart”. But when I looked at the Biblical narrative itself, his actions showed the complete opposite of any standard for Christian piety.

Even if the narrative tries to portray him as a hero, it seems certain episodes were so well known, not even Levitical priests and scribes could omit or justify them in the Biblical account they wrote. So that we are left with more than one episode that makes us question the true character of King David.

The infamous story in which David plots the death of the loyal Urias to take his wife is no secret to any Christian, yet I’ve seen countless Evangelicals naming their kids “David”. But I guess it’s fine because, according to them, David was still a “man after God’s own heart” and we are all sinners too, after all. So, why not?
