Privilege and Nature, by Rolando Favela

Being both a child of immigrants and an environmentalist has given me a unique perspective on the world. I have seen firsthand the challenges that immigrants face, as communities of color and lower-income communities are more greatly impacted by climate change. I have also seen the resilience and strength of these communities in the face of adversity and am glad to see that efforts are underway to educate residents and mitigate impacts on climate resiliency.

Recently, I played a role in organizing a Latinx Stewardship Day event in Possum Hollow Woods, where there was mindful outreach for people of the Latinx community on environmental issues, such as climate change. This is significant as there are not many organizations providing environmental engagement for Spanish speaking communities. To some, this would otherwise represent a significant population that is less connected to the environment as a form of leisure recreation.
