On The Riverbank

Buenos Aires seems inundated by humidity. The Rio de la Plata is at its eastern boundary. The river serves as a perimeter; it defines the border between what flows and what does not.

From time to time, the river creeps into the streets, sometimes literally, as in Sudestadas when the rain and southeast winds swell its banks. Then the water flows up through the city sewers.

But even without the rain, the river is omnipresent through the humidity in the air. Hence, the need for effective antiperspirants if you walk its streets; hence, the liveliness of its nights when the humidity gives some respite.

This river is like a sea. The city flows like a river.
