Reviving Ryukyu: A Journey to Empowerment through Ancient Dance

Welcome to the inaugural post of TIDANA’s Medium blog, a space dedicated to the revival and celebration of Ryukyuan culture, traditions, and dance. I am Julia, a TV news reporter in Washington D.C., and together with Chie, we are the founders of TIDANA. Our journey as traditional Ryukyuan dancers has been shaped by our unique experiences — me, as a multi-racial person growing up in Okinawa, and Chie, embracing her heritage in the heart of Okinawa.

Our titles, “KanashuMei” for myself and “Tidakai” for Chie, embody our dedication to the ancient rituals and dances of Ryukyu. These dances, once the sacred domain of female priestesses known as Nulu, have over time been co-opted and used as political tools, often sidelining the powerful feminine spirit they originally held. Our mission is to rekindle this lost essence, bringing back the true power and grace of these practices.

Website
