It’s All About Choice — Oh and Men Taking Responsibility for Their Actions
<p>I sometimes wonder if I am the product of marital rape.</p>
<p>You see, I was born in the early 80s, my parent's relationship was already hostile, and in Scotland at that time, it wasn’t until a <a href="https://www.scotsman.com/news/opinion/columnists/leader-comment-year-when-marital-rape-became-a-crime-will-shock-you-1433055" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">court ruling in 1989</a> that rape within the confines of marriage was recognised as a crime.</p>
<p>Yes, the last few decades have seen women’s rights soar, but an interesting correlation is the increase in men (and some women) <a href="https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/caroline-west-on-consent-and-sexual-assault-5555020-Sep2021/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">victim blaming and gaslighting women who report sexual violence</a>.</p>
<p>In my previous role as a Detective in the police, I spent several years working in the sexual offences department. In that line of work, you become desensitised to sexual language or words used to describe genitals.</p>
