Repository Vs Depository — Do They Mean Different Things?

Repository comes from the 15th century French word repositoire meaning ‘placed back.’ (I always think 'repose,’ as in something resting in storage) Repository is a more common word than depository - generally because it’s 200 years older - and it means a place where things are stored.
More specifically, you can use the word repository to describe a place where significant items are stored, such as pieces of art, important documents and artifacts.
I would also use repository in a metaphorical sense. For example in my circle of friends, I’m known (rather flatteringly) as the person who usually knows what unusual or obscure words mean. In other words, to them, I am a repository of word definitions.
