Refermate 2023 Scholarship

There is a spectrum of accessibility to education across our country, but even more so, across our world. From the rising cost of higher education in the United States, to the struggles of women in the Middle East, people have sacrificed everything to obtain an education. It is a basic human right, and we should value it as the promise of the future. It should be accessible to everyone who wants to pursue it. Removing the obstacles that hinder those who don’t have the means overcome the system that has been put in place over the years should be a topic on everyone’s mind, in every newscast, and in every political debate, until we can find solutions.

In the United States the growing issue facing so many who want to pursue a higher education is the ever increasing cost of college. Couple the cost with inflation, rising interest rates, and a loosely governed student loan system, it can become a burden that many people cannot take on. Some who would have been excellent leaders, stand-outs in STEM fields, influential journalists, or great politicians have, no-doubt, been stymied by the cost of college and have instead worked blue collar jobs and made their living just getting by. Our higher education system needs to work on bringing the cost down. Administrative salaries and frivolous spending on new buildings and sports complexes come to mind, but I have no doubt that the easy availability of subsidized student loans play a part in what universities consider when they set their tuition rates. It isn’t just one thing that needs fixed. It is an overhaul starting at the top with government loan policies and university administration and working all the way down to savings plans for students and trade school accessibility.

Visit Now
