Here’s What It’s Really Like to Be a Manager

<p>In many organizations, job roles can be divided into two distinct categories &mdash; Individual Contributors (ICs) and Managers. ICs are dedicated to executing their designed function (whether it be writing code, improving performance, building tools, etc.). Managers, on the other hand, are responsible for providing their direct reports what is needed to complete their designated functions, as well as ensuring those tasks are completed on time.</p> <p>When I train someone for an upcoming&nbsp;<a href="https://medium.com/@maneeper/m-a-neepers-interview-skills-index-4f6558b637ee" rel="noopener">job interview</a>, I ask the &ldquo;why&rdquo; behind their interest in moving up. Many people state that &ldquo;becoming a manager&rdquo; is their goal or next step. This is likely due to a variety of reasons, but most often they believe that managers always make more money, are able to relax more, do less work, or even do no work.</p> <p>I don&rsquo;t judge other&rsquo;s motivation to promote or move roles; I do, however, offer my personal experience &mdash; a behind-the-scenes of sorts &mdash; when I can.</p> <p>What is it really like to be a manager? What are the parts of the job that often aren&rsquo;t discussed? Is this something that you really want to do? It&rsquo;s very common that someone moves into management and then quickly leaves or steps down.
