Reading fiction is a waste of time, really?

When people inquire about my interests, reading seems to be the most frequent answer that comes to my mind. I typically admit that I like reading.

Well, I don’t consider myself a bibliophile, a person who has a great love and admiration for reading and collects a large number of books. Nevertheless, I have a modest bookshelf in my room with various genres of books. They are mostly nonfiction, dealing with finance, accounting, psychology, and self-improvement.

But in the past two years, I feel like I’ve changed the types of books that I read. Now, I tend to spend most of my pastime reading fiction, such as novels and poetry.

Talking about books, there is a stigma that non-fiction plays a better role than fiction in developing skills and knowledge. Some even say that fiction is no more than a waste of time; it might be entertaining, but it gives nothing to advance knowledge.

In addition, reading fiction is somehow vulnerable to book-shaming, that reading non-fiction is much cooler and looks more intelligent. People sometimes discredit the value of reading fiction.
