Rainy Midnight By Childe Hassam, Oil Painting

Childe Hassam (1859–1935): Rainy Midnight, late 1890s, oil on canvas, 54 x 46.4 cm (21 1/4 x 18 1/4 in.), The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

In the late 1890s, Hassam painted a rainy night in New York in shades of blue, purple, white, black with small hints of red in some of the lights and their reflections. At the center is a horse-drawn carriage driving away, its side lights lit with white and hints of red. There are several streetlamps lit up, their light refiected in the puddles on the sidewalks and street. With the rain and collected water, the streetlamps have long, drawn-out reflections. Next to the wheels of the cab, we see the line dividing the street with sidewalk, a barely noticeable curb. At the top there are rooftop barely visible, making it a heavy rainfall.
