Göbeklitepe: Why it is more important than the Pyramids

Göbeklitepe is an archaeological site located in the Şanlıurfa Province of Turkey. It is dated to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period, making it the world’s oldest known complex of monumental structures. The site consists of a number of large stone pillars, or megaliths, arranged in circular and rectangular enclosures. Some of the pillars are carved with animal and human figures, as well as abstract symbols.

Göbeklitepe is considered to be of great importance for a number of reasons. First, it provides evidence for the existence of complex social and religious organization in the Neolithic period, much earlier than previously thought. Second, it suggests that the development of agriculture and sedentism may have been driven by religious and ritual factors, rather than purely economic ones. Third, Göbeklitepe is a unique and well-preserved example of early monumental architecture, and it offers valuable insights into the development of human art and culture.
