Put yourself in the way of pain.

This statement has been understood since the beginning of human life on earth. The early men had to go through struggle to get everything they needed—not even what they wanted.

For them to be safe, to get food, to find mate, they had to be tough against harsh conditions of nature. If not, theirs was done and that's it.

It was natural selection—the weak are eliminated and only those strong enough could continue. It was that hard and that was the drive behind the majority of their actions and discoveries.

The conditions improved over time and we got to a time where we have everything easy and at our disposal and our drive to do some things or act in some way has also reduced or become unfound.

I don't have to chase after my food again, I don't have to run away from predators and I don't have to move large boulders to get access to my shelter (if one of those early men were to be brought to the present time, he'd be like "ahhh, finally some sanity!").

This change is all good until the disadvantages of our present condition set in. We got weaker and became really lazy—physically and mentally. We now feel entitled to good things even when we have done nothing to deserve it and have become really selfish.
