The Jacqueline-De Repentigny Public Library: A Home Away from Home

On Bannantyne Street in Verdun is the Jacqueline-De Repentigny Public Library, a place I’ve been going to since I was a little girl, a place that’s always provided comfort and silence to those who need it. When you walk in, you’re immediately filled with the warmth and comfort the entrance offers, and when you walk into the actual library, it gets even better. The main sounds you can hear in the huge room are the sound of shoes on the floor, pencil or pen against paper, a page being turned, and a keyboard and mouse from one of the computers. You may sometimes catch snippets of conversations between a worker and a customer in the silence. “Where’s the DVD section?” a customer asks, “Over there” the worker guides. Or a conversation between two of the workers. “Did she return those books yet?” one of the workers asks, “Not yet” her co-worker replies.

Learn More
