Why ‘I’m Not Racist But’ Is A Problematic Statement…
<p>I could hear you in the kitchen yesterday, talking to the man plastering our kitchen, and I heard you telling him that you don’t ‘get’ pronouns. That you get ‘she’ and ‘her’ and ‘he’ and ‘him’- ‘<em>actual</em>’ genders, but that you ‘don’t get’ (/refuse to acknowledge, even) the existence of anything else.</p>
<p>And, it’s not the first time, either. I’ve noticed how you drop the topic of gender into conversation every now and then. Not as an open discussion to be had, not as an opportunity for you to listen to me, but as a ‘<em>my opinion is the only right opinion</em> (or rather, <em>THE </em>opinion, in her eyes there is only one and that’s hers. Everything else is <em>wrong</em>)…</p>
