<p>Prasarana was formed from the ashes of transport operators that had to be&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2017/07/20/mahathir-era-public-transport-systems-went-bust-says-blogger/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">rescued by government subsidies</a>&nbsp;and subsequently bought out, as car ownership and car use was made more accessible by the industrial policies of Mahathir&rsquo;s government, reducing use of public transport. Much like 1970s Singapore, KL&rsquo;s bus companies were also reorganized into the Intrakota and Cityliner services; but like the two LRT lines unable to repay their loans, both bus companies quickly went into debt. The 1997 financial crisis only made things worse.
