Jane Crow America: No Emergency Care for Pregnant Women
<p>There is a federal law known as <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1305897/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">EMTALA</a> which was passed in 1986 and guarantees access to emergency medical care. A hospital cannot ignore you and cannot shuffle you off to some other facility. If you show up at an emergency room, federal law says you must be provided needed emergency care.</p>

<p>Three judges of the Fifth Circuit of Court Appeals — three white men — agreed with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton — white man. The <a href="https://time.com/6551740/texas-ban-emergency-abortions-appeals-ruling/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Fifth Circuit ruled</a> that the federal government has no right to use EMTALA to tell Texas they have to allow an abortion in an emergency room when that abortion is necessary to protect a woman’s health and well-being.</p>
