Understanding Neuroplasticity: Harnessing the Power of Brain Change for Self-Care

Today I want to talk about neuroscience and neuroplasticity, because I am a neuro-nerd and you should be too. As my kids would say, all things neuroscience right now is my “jam”. Speaking of kids, I specifically remember being taught in the D.A.R.E. program in school that once we killed our brain cells, they were gone forever. You? Well, guess what? That is in fact, not true. The brain not only regenerates, when brain cells are “killed”, they actually revert back to an embryonic state which then allows neurogenesis, which is the regrowth of neurons. In laymen’s terms, when it comes to the synapses (connections between neurons that transfer information from neuron to neuron), that’s where plasticity comes in. You can literally retrain and “rewire” your brain any time you choose to. Your brain is malleable and will adapt with repetition. New avenues for self-care, growth, resilience, productiveness, and well-being are all directions you can choose with the information I am providing. There are so many areas of not only your lives, but others’ lives also that can be affected positively with the application of new ideas, practices and planting seeds for growth both for yourselves and those around you with the information I am about to give you.
