The Politics of Belonging

<p>Religion, nationalism, soccer, college, book clubs &mdash; what does this seemingly random grouping of things have in common? They all work on the principles of belonging. That feeling of being a part of something bigger than yourself, that at some point in our lives, most of us end up chasing, whether we want to or not, whether we are even aware of it or not. It is the feeling we look for, sometimes for security, other times for purpose. It has the power to find a way for someone who feels lost, or override rational thought with mob mentality. It can give one find strength when they feel too weak to take on a challenge all by themselves, whether it is conquering the next test, or the next nation.
