Toronto and the Picture Taken

I have a favorite picture from my childhood, one that feels warm everytime I look at it. It was taken from one of my family’s old Canon cameras, saved digitally somewhere, posted by my sister, and somehow I screenshooted it, cropped it, and made it the profile picture for my siblings group chat. My sister removed the picture from her account, meaning I no longer know where to locate the original picture. She (my eldest sister) posted it along with a warm caption that encapsulated her feelings towards watching her three younger siblings growing up, though probably not as cheesy.

My family visited Toronto one summer day in 2010. We rode the 2-hour intercity bus ride from Kitchener and the six of us managed to splurge the day with sightseeing many places. As the youngest kid starting elementary and having no responsibilities whatsoever on the trip (I only had to walk with my own two feet at least), the trip that somehow felt duty-free was one I only learned now to cherish. We went historic palace to CN Tower to science museums and subway stop after subway stop after subway stop. My dad took the lead of course and was our tour guide, mom I believe took charge in making sure none of us went missing (but eventually she herself got separated at a different subway stop). The closest people I would ever have were there with me, together in a developed country far from our homeland, and the city of Toronto reeked of things to explore and I hear it calling me to visit it again someday. Traveling felt so simple, with our own two feet and public transport, everything was easy to reach. With company, it didn’t feel like a long way.

Website
