We must remind Grassley that the court system is not just another partisan battleground
<p>Less well-known are the six years that Grassley spent <a href="https://www.press-citizen.com/story/opinion/contributors/2020/09/13/democracy-in-spite-of-peronal-branding-donald-trump-election-2020/3466756001/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">determinedly packing</a> the lower courts. Grassley’s committee virtually stopped confirming judges during Obama’s last two years and transferred more than 100 vacancies to Republican appointments. Once Donald Trump became president, Grassley led the breakneck rush to confirm nominees. <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/02/16/court-appointments-age-biden-trump-judges-age/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Younger nominees</a>. With less review, less discussion, and sometimes <a href="https://www.press-citizen.com/story/opinion/contributors/2020/09/13/democracy-in-spite-of-peronal-branding-donald-trump-election-2020/3466756001/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">lacking</a> what the American Bar Association considered basic legal credentials. Grassley’s collusion allowed Trump to appoint more Supreme Court justices in four years than any president <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Judicial_vacancies_during_the_Trump_administration" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">since Ronald Reagan</a> and more appeals court judges than some eight-year presidents, including Obama.</p>
<p>Put differently, Grassley clearly objects to court-packing only when he’s not the one doing it.</p>
