Clothing as Symbols in Pan’s Labyrinth

Pans Labyrinth is a film by Guillermo del Toro that can be read as a modern folk tale. This movie has many symbols, one of which is the clothing that the characters wear, particularly Ofelia. Ofelia is the main character; she is a little girl who had recently moved to the forest to live with her stepfather, Captain Vidal, and his battalion alongside her mother. Her widowed mother was ill while pregnant with Vidal’s baby. Ofelia had recently lost her father in the war, the film alluding to Vidal, her cruel stepfather, being the reason for his death. On the property she had moved onto, Ofelia had discovered a labyrinth. There, she met a faun, which led her to believe she was a princess lost from her kingdom. The faun gifted her a book, one that would guide her to find her true home, the kingdom. Throughout the movie, Ofelia goes through an adventure to find her way back. Whether you view the film as a delusion, an escapist tactic that Ofelia uses to distract herself from her tragic home life; it also can be viewed literally, as if this fantasy world was real and she desperately needed to get back to her real family. No matter the interpretation, the clothing Ofelia is seen wearing in the movie reflects her situation.
