Oxytocin and Why We Care

The answer here is fairly simple. Generosity. We feel great when we do great for others, and we feel great when we receive. This forms a virtuous circle. I give, their oxytocin spikes, seeing their gratitude, my oxytocin spikes, with these higher levels, those around us seem a little friendlier. It becomes more plausible that random acts of kindness will be welcomed and through this we can bring a community together of mutual positive action. The only care we must take is not putting too much burden on reciprocation. If we clearly give only to receive it makes the action feel like a manipulation and disrupts the whole thing. Think of giving like putting a reservoir of good will out into the world. You don’t know who will give back, you don't know when or how but there will be people who were moved by your kindness in ways you don't expect.
