The Oppressed become Oppressors

In Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire writes, “The oppressed, instead of striving for liberation, tend themselves to become oppressors.” He is showing how, often instead of choosing to be, people previously oppressed turn into the people doing the oppressing. Oppression is described as a prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control, but there can also be ‘willing’ oppression, that is the idea of someone unknowingly submitting to unjust treatment. The theme of oppression comes up often in the history of the world, no matter how big or small. For example, many Germans were brainwashed under Hitler’s rule and allowed themselves to be either cruelly tortured or controlled. Oppression is a common occurrence throughout time and history. It does not matter who or where those that are oppressed through discrimination become the oppressors in the future.
