#OnTheMove: A Day in the Life of A Kenyan Truck Driver

In as far as we say ‘no pain no gain’; Kenyan truckers seem to get their meager wages in the hardest way. It’s reported that most employers hardly care about their truckers’ welfare save for the cargo’s timely and safe arrival at its destination. A truck driver starts from the port of Mombasa headed for Kigali, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, or Malawi without knowing when he or she will be back and whatever will happen along the way.

The driver bids farewell to his loved ones and he hits the road for most of the calendar days in a year as most drivers have no monthly or yearly leave. The challenges found on the journey are many and often place drivers in difficult situations. A common occurrence is a nightmare faced at the hands of law enforcement, especially in cases where truck owners refuse to rescue the drivers when arrested. In some cases, the employer would only bail out his truck leaving the driver in the cells. Stigma, fatigue, money extortion, and police harassment are the order of the day for a truck driver in Kenya.

Website
