AN OLD WOMAN

The poem titled, an old woman, which is written by Arun Kolatkar, tells us about how an old woman has to beg for herself to survive in her own homeland. The setting of the poem is on a hilly area. The mood of the poem escalates rather quickly from irritation to anger to realization and finally the man feeling helpless and desperate. The form of the poem is a free verse, having three lines in each stanza, known as terset. The old woman is a stubborn lady because of the way she forces the man to give her a fifty paise coin and also to follow her to the temple all the way with him protesting. She is desperate as well because of the way she has to beg for money for her to survive. She is extremely strong for an old person for her will to live even under these difficult circumstances. The metaphor used in the poem is, “clear through the bullet holes”.
