The Real Problem With the “We ❤️ NYC” Logo

Last year, the city of New York unveiled a new logo to the displeasure of many New Yorkers. The only good thing about the logo seemed to be that it gave us all a new thing to hate. It was jarring to have a beloved icon ripped away from us so quickly. At first, I thought it was ugly — which it is — but I’m able to accept the possibility that its aesthetic issues will fade and be forgotten. Eventually. Then I felt betrayed because a symbol that was so meaningful to the city I call home was taken from us. Next, I was sad because I believe that the original symbol will fade from our memories just as the New York City of the ’70s has.
