Passing Through the Eye of a Needle

There is a saying in the Bible that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. In my Catholic elementary school days, we were taught this meant, in essence, that if you are rich you can’t get into Heaven. It wealth-shamed people, and I began to worry about the families in town who I thought of as wealthy.

Some of my friends had parents who were doctors or lawyers. Some owned nice businesses or had a cottage on a lake up north. They wore suits and drove new cars. Some flew on airplanes to places on vacation during the summer. They ate out at restaurants even when it wasn’t a holiday.
