Navigating Body Image Through the Years

I have been trying to lose weight since I was 11 years old. I vividly remember being weighed in gym class in the 6th grade in front of everyone else. They called my name and I had to get up in front of everyone and walk over to the scale and step up. I think I weighed around 115 pounds and a lot of the other girls in my class weighed between 80–90 pounds. I was mortified. I couldn’t believe that my number was 3 digits and I couldn’t believe that I was the “fattest” person in this group. I’m not sure if there were other girls who felt the same way I did or if they were going through the same dilemma, but I felt embarrassed and alone. I remember going home that day and staring at my “belly” in the mirror wondering why it wasn’t as flat as the other girls. That’s when I started comparing my appearance to others.
