Recalling the Mysore Lancers’ valiant pursuit during the “Great War”
<p>A significant fight that had a relation to the former princely State of Mysore took place on September 23, 1918, toward the close of the First World War (1914–1918), in Haifa (now in Israel). That day in Haifa, troops from the Mysore Lancers, a cavalry unit established by the Mysore State and armed solely with lances (a long spear-like javelin), overcame the better-equipped Ottoman soldiers, winning one of the most significant battles of the “Great War” for the Allied forces. The day’s events are noteworthy for military history as well since this was one of the last cavalry charges that led to a win in a modern battle because cavalry units would be rendered obsolete in later mechanised conflicts.</p>
