My Favourite New-To-Me Album From 1988

So intoned Greg Lake as the intro to Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s Karn Evil 9 in 1973 — one of rock music’s most prominent “supergroups,

These supergroups bring together luminaries from different corners of the musical universe, birthing collaborations that set the stage ablaze. The world of rock, in particular, has witnessed the emergence of several such titanic collectives — Cream, Blind Faith, Asia, CSN&Y and Bad Company are a few I remember off the top of my head, but there are many more.

One supergroup who have hitherto flown entirely under my radar is The Traveling Wilburys, the short-lived collaboration between an incredible collection of genuine musical legends — Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty.

Let’s strap in and listen to the first of what turned out to be a brief two-album career for this phenomenal musical project.

The Travelling Wilbury story began when George Harrison was working on his solo album, Cloud Nine, in 1987, with Jeff Lynne serving as his producer. George needed to record a B-side track for a single release and, in a moment of spontaneity, invited Roy Orbison to join the session. Orbison enthusiastically accepted the invitation, and the three musicians found themselves in the studio, creating magic.

The trio soon realised they needed a rhythm section for the track, which led to the inclusion of Tom Petty and his bandmate, drummer Jim Keltner.

Website
