This piece is not a critique of Taylor Swift, her discography, or artistry. This piece is simply meant to comment on the phenomenon I have witnessed of an intensely overbearing Taylor Swift fandom — from my generation in particular — and the interest I take in that considering Taylor Swift’s privilege, past controversies, and the fact that she is not doing anything musically that queer/POC artists aren’t also doing. Where is there space for artists — aside from Taylor Swift — to reach that same reverence and reach in the music industry? If there isn’t space, what does this say about the systems governing the industry as well as society at large?
