Music and Survival, a Conjecture

I suspect that the reason we like certain music is that the abstract patterns in the music match well with the mental models our species have found to be helpful in survival that are passed down to us from generation to generation. The mental models are shaped by genetic inheritance and our experiences. When we experience the underlying patterns of survival again, it’s likely that deep down it could generate a validating experience — a proxy of evidence that our beliefs aren’t completely wrong. It’s like a set of neurons saying: “I told you, it’s that pattern, it’s that same pattern again! We don’t know what it means but there’s some exciting feeling based on a very reliable code that we’ve all been doing a great job.”
