Bill Maher and the Willful Ignorance of Modern Atheism

In a recent December episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher comes up with a Jeopardy board for “gods born on the 25th of December”, as a way of mocking the Christian dating of Christmas. In it he includes Horus, Mithra, Adonis, Osiris, Dionysis and more. He ends by saying “those are all real by the way, they think I’m making this up but I’m not”. (He is, by the way, we’ll get to that later.)

Maher often uses this idea of “theft” by pointing out apparent similarities between myths, implying that their falsehood is demonstrated somehow because Christianity, the most unoriginal of them all, is apparently simply purloining its stories and cobbling them together.
