Mexico’s bittersweet love for Coca-Cola

I fell in love with the town immediately. Our tour guide, Carlos, showed us around enthusiastically, pointing out the crunchy Chapulines (roasted grasshoppers), where to buy the best Amber crystal, and how to partake in local sauna rituals called Temazcal.

Unfortunately, it’s not all winking suns and rainbow houses. It’s also a place of poverty, entrenched racism, and a population with deteriorating health. During our tour, Carlos brought us back to earth with a surprising topic: Coca-Cola.

“ I’m sure you’ve all noticed how often we Mexicans drink Coca-Cola.” he began as his face turned sour. “ It’s cheaper and easier to find than water. “
