What to do with that street kitten you hear meowing outside

STEP ONE. I can’t stress the importance of this step enough — wait a day or two to see if the mama comes around. Giving a cold starving street cat a home is a wonderful act of kindness, but taking a sweet kitten from its mama isn’t!! That kitten might be just fine on the street. In the meantime, put out some food (anything non-vegan is fine aka meat, cheese, eggs) and water and wait to see what happens. If you want to be a SUPER all star, a nice box with a blanket will keep them warm and happy. And if you want to be SUPER SUPER above and beyond? Put some plastic down first so the box doesn’t get soaked through by rain.

STEP TWO. Ok so you waited and no mama. Your heart is still melting and you can’t bare to leave him outside in the cold. So you bring him inside. No matter if you have other animals or not, PUT THAT KITTY IN ITS OWN ROOM. He’s likely to be stressed, overwhelmed, and scared. You put him in a small room (which turns out to be the bathroom in a lot of these one-room Tel Aviv apartments), put some food and water in there, a little litter in any small container you can find, and a blanket or towel so he has something to cuddle with. That’s it. Close the door and let him rest. OF COURSE you can (and should) go in and play with him or just sit on your phone, but in general you can leave him be.
