Cohort Stories: Meet Vivian

My mother immigrated to the United States from Mexico at a young age and has experienced no shortage of hardship since then. She has persevered through extreme poverty, medical malpractice, gender-based violence, and racial discrimination throughout her life. She started working as a seamstress at fourteen in factories in Los Angeles. She fought ceaselessly for a better life, first for her younger siblings, whom she took custody of at the age of twenty-one, and then for my older sister and me. She’s instilled within me an unwavering work ethic, which has enabled me to push through the imposter syndrome I feel frequently being the only Latina, gay, or female person in Data Science classes at Yale College.
