Inside a Forensic Medical Center
<p>The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Maryland is the largest freestanding forensic medical center in the U.S., occupying an entire block in Baltimore. It is also one of the nation’s busiest, conducting more than 18,000 investigations a year.</p>

<p>Reports of sudden and unexpected deaths are received by forensic investigators — the medical examiner’s first responders. FIs respond to every scene to document the circumstances of a death and begin gathering medical evidence for the forensic investigation.</p>
