Melbourne’s Royal Botanic gardens were establised on land along the banks of the Yarra river as it bends and curls its way to the bay. The garden slopes down to the southern banks of the Yarra, cradling the pre-colonial swampy billabongs within its present day ornamental lake. On the nothern banks of the Yarra across from the gardens lie Melbourne’s sports’ precinct boasting the MCG, the Rod Laver arena, the National Sports museum; a paean to Australia’s sporting culture and history. Here in the gardens is the Herbarium, a kind of plant museum or library; the continent’s history told through its plants; preserving, cataloging, researching, conserving and educating. I have spent many happy hours here mounting and preserving specimens.
