Marina Abramović is still paving the way for female artists

It’s strange to think that the degree of seperation between me and Marina Abramović is just two. I’ve met Melati Suryodarmo a handful of times and she in turn was mentored by Marina Abramović.

You might not immediately recognize the name, but you might recognize some of her works. Arguably, her most famous performance is The Artist is Present, where she sits on one side of a table and an audience member will sit across from her. She sits on her chair and she doesn’t move, she doesn’t react, she is just staring into the eyes of the sitter in front of her. Many people describe different feelings as they sat across from her, including feeling vulnerable, raw, and as if Abramović had somehow stripped them down with her own eyes.

She’s done many great, memorable performances that shaped the way we look at performance art, so it’s no wonder she’s regarded as one of the best currently living artists in the world. She doesn’t really do physically grueling performances anymore (understandable since she is 76 years old), but it doesn’t mean she’s done with the art world. From now until the end of the year, the Royal Academy of Arts is holding a retrospective on Abramović. That in itself is an amazing accomplishment,
