The Banned Book of the Week: The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

That said, these are not the only books subject to recent bans. School districts look to ban books for profanity, sex, violence, and a multitude of other reasons. What strikes me most about bans of The Handmaid’s Tale, though, is that they seem to strike at the book’s perceived political messaging and anti-Christianity.

For a student of the First Amendment, the idea of a school district banning a book for its political and religious stance might seem… well… entirely antithetical to the speech rights the First Amendment is supposed to protect. It’s government choosing what political and religious ideas are allowed, which before the current iteration of the Supreme Court, we could presume fell precisely into the realm of Not Okay.
