Mara Sunday Service — Freedom

Questioning before answering

The theme of this painting is Freedom, this work aims to ask questions about freedom rather than answer them. It asks about our perception of freedom, how we feel about it and what we truly believe it to be. The individual depicted in this work, finds the fish to be ‘Stupid”, stupid for being so happy and jolly in an aquarium that is supposedly a cage for the fish.

This Mara is representative of many people, many folks in their opinions of freedom and who is truly in bondage. To most of us, the idea of freedom is to not be in captivity and for this reason, the idea of the fish being so jolly and excited despite being trapped in an aquarium away from its natural habitat feels ‘stupid’

Despite being in a bird cage himself, this Mara is more concerned and bemused by the sense of happiness and lack of concern that the fish in the aquarium seems to be showing. It felt like such a shame for the fish to be in the confines of glass, away from its kind and at the mercy of men.

The average Joe believes himself to have freedom simply because he wakes up every day and goes to his 9–5 on weekdays, spends the weekends at the beach, the zoo or perhaps just out somewhere to see a fish in an aquarium and unconsciously reminds himself that he is free. But is he?

Learn More
