I’m no longer ashamed to tell my story
<p>In the years before <em>Roe v. Wade</em>, the abortion ban made terminating a pregnancy dangerous. Even getting care for high-risk pregnancies was challenging, with anxious doctors who were worried about legal repercussions. It was not easy to end an unplanned pregnancy.</p>
<p>At the time, I worked with a women’s group on the University of Wisconsin campus that met at the YWCA to help women in need of resources and abortion counseling. I heard women’s stories of back-alley abortions or taking matters into their own hands by inciting a fight or plunging down a flight of stairs to induce miscarriage. One desperate mother jumped from her hospital window after giving birth to her fourth child, leaving her husband to raise their newborn and three other children.</p>
