Grit and a little luck

Success in the mountains requires many things — physical fitness, climbing skill appropriate to the objective (e.g. rock, ice, snow, and maybe all of the above) proficiency in technical systems to maintain an acceptable level of risk, navigation…the list goes on. A healthy dose of luck never hurts either.

In a previous post I talked about the importance of mental fortitude to survive adverse conditions in business, life, and in the mountains. A counterpart to fortitude is having the clarity of awareness and the courage to accept the current reality. Awareness in the mountains may include tracking the approaching weather system, monitoring the snow conditions as they change in real time, or noticing the technical difficulty of the route. Awareness also includes noticing what is happening with your clients, climbing partners, and yourself — are you and your team suited to the objective and moving well? Or is something off?

Website
