All Roads Lead to Cat
<p>I walked the Appian Way today. Not all of it, of course — just a stretch. I felt like merchant from a distant and exotic land coming to sell my wares. Or long-distance runner bearing an important message for the Emperor. I walked over the same ancient, uneven stones that travelers have been treading over for century upon century.</p>

<p>I realized I was not alone. Flanking me like living (adorable) gargoyles were nearly a dozen cats. The watched me pass from their indifferent little slitted eyes, busy sunbathing or chasing phantoms in the grass. Maybe their ancestors used to watch the Romans in the same way. I asked a few of them if I could take their headshots, and they politely obliged:</p>
