Let’s Focus Less on “Lazy Girl Jobs” and More on Why They’re Popular

The latest trend in the so-called Gen Z work culture is “Lazy Girl Jobs.” This is a term that is used to describe a job that is fairly simple, doesn’t require a lot of effort, offers a safe environment (an office or a work from home setup), and pays comfortably.

There are a lot of these kinds of jobs available if you look — they’re things like marketing associates and account managers, jobs where you enter data or do basic computer-based tasks. They tend to require a college degree and have basic, straightforward requirements that don’t call for overtime at any point. Basically, they’re jobs that enable someone to “act their wage,” or do only what the job description calls for and no more.

This all started with the Great Resignation, then Quiet Quitting (or “Acting Your Wage” for those of us who actually like the idea), then Bare Minimum Mondays rolled around and kept the fire going. Now Lazy Girl Jobs have the business folks up in arms over how lazy Gen Z is, apparently. It’s a tale as old as time — as someone who is considered an older Millennial, I got hit with the “laziest generation” tag for a while too.

(Now we get lambasted for being too attached to our jobs and destroying our mental health for employers that won’t promote us, so I guess there’s no winning. Sigh.)

Ignoring the general awfulness of generational tags like Millennial and Gen Z, young workers have been bucking work norms for a long time. Technology improves, work culture shifts, and what is considered good is later considered bad as time marches forward. It’s a tale as old as time — those darn young whippersnappers don’t respect their elders like they should!
