Laycan and Laytime for Maritime Data Analysts

When a bulk vessel is tasked with loading and discharging a cargo two basic criteria need to be met. The first is the window of time at which a vessel is to arrive to load cargo. The second is the time allowed to load and discharge the cargo.

The window of time for vessel arrival is called laycan, the word itself being an amalgamation of laydays and cancellation. Laycan is a commercial agreement that a vessel should arrive at a predetermined geographic area between two explicit dates (Schoenbaum, 2012, § 8–8). If the vessel is early, the vessel may need to wait. If the vessel is late, the cargo lifting may be canceled.

Website
