A place where Gods were made

The bus stops at a dusty, deserted landscape. It seems like we are in the buttfuck-middle-of-nowhere with nothing to give us company save for the scarecrow-like cacti that surround us. The sun beats down with all its fury. It’s not very hot, but the high altitude and the lack of cover makes your skin burn. Pretty soon another tour bus arrives, and another, and another, dumping hundreds of tourists on to the bleak landscape. Walk a few hundred feet, past the gate, around the corner of a dusty, hilly mound, and we notice why we are here. A massive stone structure rises from the ground. It is so high that the people who are climbing it appear like tiny ants scrambling up an ant-hill. It’s the Burj Khalifa of Ancient Mesoamerica. The Eiffel Tower of its time. It’s the La Piramide del Sol — the Pyramid of the Sun, in the ancient city of Teotihuacan.
