Kuching Kitty-Cats

A few days ago we left Kuching, Malaysia, and said “goodbye” to the Cat. What?? In the Malay language “Kuching” means “cat”.

Why name a city Kuching? There are many many explanations for why it is named Kuching but no definite answer. If you do a Google search, you find this information: “Many of the locals refer to Kuching as the “Cat City” but it more likely comes from the Chinese word for port (“cochin”) coupled with the Malay name mata kucing (cat’s-eye) for the longan fruit, a popular trade item.”

Whatever the reason for naming the city Kuching (Cat), they certainly play with the name. I enjoyed the many cat decorations around the city.

We stopped at the James Brooke Bistro and Cafe beside the Sarawak River on our first night in Kuching. We enjoyed having a quiet place to stop along the Sarawak Riverwalk for a drink and a bite to eat, but we also enjoyed these cat displays in front of the Bistro.

Learn More
