1920s-present: Kibbe & A Society in Flux
<p>The 1920s was a very prosperous period, America had won WW1, the economy grew by 42%, mass production had spread and consumer goods were widely available. This was a period of opulence and indulgence. The Great Gatsby was published in 1925, right in the middle of the decade and serves as an interesting portrait of American society of the 20s. This was also a period of immense social and political upheaval. Flapper girls were in vogue; they were considered rebellious and reckless. The dresses were loose-fitted, with no waist emphasis and the cut of the clothes was straight or rectangular, which is to say they were quite shapeless. This is in stark contrast to the heavily draped and structured corsetry of the previous decades. Clothing was constructed without restraints (literally) and this seemed to be emblematic of the spirit of the era where women enjoyed more social freedom.</p>
